Stottler Henke Introduces Enhanced Version of DataMontage Data Visualization Software
Information-dense interactive displays help analysts review and interpret complex, time-oriented data quickly and consistently

SAN MATEO, Calif., December 14, 2011 – Stottler Henke Associates, Inc. (www.stottlerhenke.com) today announced the immediate availability of an enhanced version of its DataMontage™ software for rapid visual analysis of complex, time-oriented data. DataMontage 3.0 introduces new features that enable analysts to visualize data more flexibly and interactively.

DataMontage is a Java class library and set of software applications that displays information- dense arrays of timelines and graphs that can be stacked vertically or arranged in rows and columns, so users can see important patterns in large, multivariate datasets that cannot be seen using traditional data displays. DataMontage offers unparalleled control over each display’s layout, appearance and interactivity. For example, flexible specification of the color, shape, and size of graph and timeline symbols enable DataMontage displays to encode multiple attributes in high-dimensional data and highlight significant or unexpected data points. Colored lines and regions in graphs help users compare actual data to constant or time-varying reference values and ranges. Powerful zooming, scrolling, graph filtering, and data point highlighting features enable analysts to analyze subsets of the data from multiple analytical perspectives in order to discern significant relationships and trends, interpret their significance, and discover causal relationships quickly and easily.

DataMontage enhances data review, decision support, and real-time monitoring systems for diverse applications in which professionals must rapidly detect temporal patterns spanning many continuous and discrete variables and events in order to interpret complex data and reach time- critical decisions. Applications include patient care, outcomes research, drug safety surveillance, market analysis, engineering analysis, manufacturing production scheduling and process control, system monitoring and problem diagnosis, and the planning, execution monitoring, and after- action review of projects, programs, and missions.

DataMontage 3.0 includes dozens of enhancements, such as:

  • JavaScript support, which enables users to select among pre-defined views of the data in the DataMontage display. Selecting a view runs a user-configurable JavaScript command to filter or highlight the display, in order to show relevant subsets of the data or make certain patterns easier to see. Users can also use JavaScript math expressions to specify time-varying reference lines and region boundaries within graphs.
  • Hierarchical timelines, which enable users to switch quickly between summary and detailed views of the data by opening and closing timelines to show and hide their children timelines.
  • Graph Queries, which enable users to show a subset of the graphs and timelines that satisfy configurable selection criteria. For example, a DataMontage display could be configured with many queries, each of which displays a subset of the patient’s full medical history that relates to a different medical problem, health maintenance issue, or other clinical perspective. Each clinical view would filter the graphs and timelines to show only the diagnoses, medications, procedures, and lab tests that relate to its clinical perspective.

Some customers use DataMontage to display graphical summaries of patient data that help medical reviewers and researchers spot significant patterns more effectively. For example, DataMontage is embedded within the US Government’s Pharmacovigilance Defense Application System (PVDAS), an innovative software tool for performing pharmacovigilance using the Department of Defense Military Health System’s medical data. “Graphical timeline displays enable researchers to see clinically significant patterns in the data and understand the time course of each patient’s drug exposures and diseases quickly and consistently,” according to COL Trinka Coster, the contracting officer’s representative for the PVDAS project and Program Director of the Army’s Pharmacovigilance Center. “Using these graphical data displays will enable researchers to easily validate potential drug safety problems,” continues Coster. (These opinions do not constitute endorsement of any particular software product by the Department of the Army, Department of Defense or the U.S. Government).

DataMontage’s modular architecture and extensive Java programming interface enable it to be embedded within desktop applications, Java applets, and Java web server applications to provide powerful visualization capabilities throughout the organization. DataMontage’s published programming interface and Extensible Markup Language (XML) file format enable programs written in Java and other languages to configure and generate DataMontage displays. The DataMontage Editor end user application enables analysts to create sophisticated graph arrays interactively, without programming.

DataMontage 3.0 is available immediately. Stottler Henke markets DataMontage to independent software vendors, systems integrators, and end user organizations. Pricing starts at $395 for a Developer license. Server-based and OEM pricing are also available. Development of DataMontage was funded in part by the U.S. Department of Defense and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
