Computer Security
AFRL has recognized that to date, intrusion detection systems have had two major problems: inadequate sensitivity to attacks and incredibly high false alarm rates. Stottler Henke, under the AFRL contract “A New Integrated Approach to Intrusion Prevention, Detection, and Response (SBIR Phase II)” has shown that we need not trade sensitivity for accuracy. By correlating evidence from network and host based sensors, the Intelligent Correlation of Evidence (ICE) System can validate the presence of an attack before reporting it and also detect attacks that single-sensor based systems would miss. ICE appears to be the first in what is sure to be a new generation of tools that can fuse reports from a number of sources including other intrusion detection systems. We are eagerly awaiting the next release of the ICE system and look forward to the continuing advancements in Intrusion Detection/Prevention/Response Technology which Stottler Henke has been so adept in achieving.– John Maxey Air Force Research Laboratory Program Manager
Training
TAO ITS gives a student tactical action officer ten times the tactical decision-making opportunity (compared with that provided by) existing training systems.
– LCDR Gene Black US Navy Lead AEGIS Instructor, Surface Warfare Officers School (SWOS) TAO ITS trains US Navy officers to serve as tactical action officers (TAOs) at the Surface Warfare Officer’s School.
The TAO ITS enables both qualitative and quantitative improvements in TAO training. Using the ITS, students at SWOS can engage in self-paced instruction and will be able to spend more time practicing their skills. In addition, an ITS classroom accommodates more than twice as many students at one time as a traditional classroom, so training is accelerated.
– Susan Panichas Northrop Grumman Program Manager, WatchStation simulator Stottler Henke developed the TAO ITS for use at the US Navy’s Surface Warfare Officer’s School under subcontract to Northrop Grumman. TAO ITS is integrated with Northrop Grumman’s WatchStation simulator.
I see this model growing in use beyond Air University classrooms by empowering instructors to make changes to a wargame or simulation, based on the needs of their students, without having to process software change requests in a system which can take weeks if not months to complete. Given time and a growing community library of SimVentive scenarios, this software will change the way instructors use games and simulations in the classroom.

OMIA gives students cockpit ‘button crunching’ training, so that when they get into the helicopter or a glass simulator, they know what’s where. In its current iteration, OMIA has already saved the government millions of dollars, compared to using a fully-featured glass simulator. It’s just what we need to get students familiar with button crunching.

Scheduling
Temporis is a crucial piece of software that will enable the President’s Vision for Space Exploration. We are very excited about the prospect of devising a highly automated way of accomplishing this scheduling in-flight, by leveraging the work Stottler Henke already has done with Aurora.– Christopher Leslie United Space Alliance Senior Mission Planner United Space Alliance selected Aurora for inclusion in their Temporis system to provide automated scheduling on-board the Crew Exploration Vehicle.
The precursor version of Aurora is used daily to support major processing and space shuttle launch decisions; to coordinate our launches with those of Russia, Japan, and the European Space Agency; and to determine NASA’s launch requirements and flight rates. It enables us to generate complex schedules in a few hours, compared to days or weeks required by our previous scheduling systems.
– Tom Overton NASA Shuttle Processing Manager AMP is used by NASA to schedule ground-based activities to prepare the space shuttle before each mission and refurbish the shuttle after each mission.
The resulting AMP product enables expert Shuttle schedulers to input their knowledge to create a working automatic scheduling system. In contrast, personnel unfamiliar with long-term scheduling can maintain the system without the years of training that were previously required to handle such a task. For the past 8 years, AMP has been maintaining the mission manifest, performing advanced scheduling studies, and producing manifest reports for all NASA field centers on a daily basis. Kennedy also uses AMP to schedule the short- and long-term external tank/solid rocket booster processing in a much faster and more accurate manner than the previous manual process.

Data Visualization
Graphical timeline displays enable researchers to see clinically significant patterns in the data and understand the time course of each patient’s drug exposures and diseases quickly and consistently. Using these graphical data displays will enable researchers to easily validate potential drug safety problems.

DataMontage provides a ‘snapshot’ view of information for a single patient in a clinical trial, which enables our users to view the information concisely, and is one of many ways CTSD helps to speed review, analysis, and interpretation of clinical trial data. DataMontage complements the rest of our products’ functionality, which in combination helps our customers to make more- informed decisions about the safety of their vaccines, drugs, devices, and biologics. DataMontage’s modular design made it easy to integrate into our solutions.

Using DataMontage’s rich programming interface, we can quickly implement sophisticated, graphical displays with fine control over their appearance and customized user interactions. Also, DataMontage provides unique visualization methods, such as non-linear time scales and timeline correlation, which enable physicians to see subtle patterns in complex data sets more quickly and intuitively.
– Dr. Lingji Chen Scientific Systems Company, Inc. Principal Investigator, Problem Oriented Information Networking Tool (POINT), developed for the US Army. POINT uses DataMontage to present information-dense problem-oriented graphical views of patient data to physician users, generated using an extensive medical knowledge base and sophisticated inference mechanism.
DataMontage is a wonderful tool for helping drug safety physicians evaluate signals, by drilling down and making sense of complex patient histories which caused the signals to be generated. DataMontage’s time-aligned displays of adverse reaction onsets and durations, dosing start and stop times of suspect and concomitant medications, and diagnostic test results will help our pharmaceutical users assess the nature and meaning of each patient’s detailed sequence of clinical events more quickly and intuitively.
