Stottler Henke Announces New Web Service that Provides Error-free Geotagging of Text

Streamlined Process Allows Users to Easily Associate Accurate Coordinate Data with Places Named in Text Documents

SEATTLE, WA, August 6, 2009 – Stottler Henke Associates, Inc. today announced the release of GeoDoc (geodoc.stottlerhenkeinc.com), a new web application that semi- automatically generates accurate geospatially-grounded text. GeoDoc utilizes intelligent, context-sensitive heuristics to add coordinate metadata tags, called geotags, to text documents with unprecedented accuracy.

Existing commercial solutions are optimized for rapid analysis of large batches of documents in a quick and dirty manner. However, when publishing content, accuracy is often more important than speed. With Stottler Henke’s GeoDoc application content publishers can now efficiently edit tagged documents to certify that the names of places in the document are geotagged completely and correctly. This place checking process, once cumbersome and time consuming, can now be accomplished in a manner very similar to your typical spell check.

According to T.J. Goan, manager of the Geodoc project, “This review and editing process revolutionizes geo-parsing of text documents. Our interface makes it easy for users to recognize mistakes. On top of that, GeoDoc’s automated reasoning capabilities allow it to fix the geotags of multiple locations based on feedback provided with a single click of the mouse.”

GeoDoc now inserts its location metadata utilizing Geography Markup Language (GML) format as well as Microformat-based output. The Microformat output inserts tags into the original document that can then be recognized by applications such as Operator, a Firefox add-on. Users who discover and exploit this information will be able to automatically generate maps, charts, and tables related to the text, as well as mash-up the geospatial content with other information.

A free beta version of the GeoDoc web application is available immediately from Stottler Henke at http://geodoc.stottlerhenke.com. GeoDoc is the latest in a series of commercial software products created by Stottler Henke, a software development firm that specializes in applying artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies to create “smart” systems and tools. GeoDoc was developed with funding from the US Army Topographic Engineering Center (USATEC), Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC).
